Authors keep copyright. Most reuse needs no permission from anyone; that is the point of the licence.
Copyright
Authors and contributors retain copyright in their work. You grant Bassi Foundation Press a non-exclusive licence to publish, distribute, archive and preserve it. We do not take an assignment of copyright and we do not require exclusivity. In edited volumes, each contributor retains copyright in their own chapter.
Reusing Our Books
Every title is published under a Creative Commons licence, stated on the book and in its metadata. Under the default CC BY 4.0 licence you may, without asking us:
- Read, download, print, store and redistribute the whole book or any part of it.
- Post it on a repository, a course site, a personal page or a mirror.
- Set a chapter as a course reading, print it in a coursepack, or include it in a reader.
- Quote it at any length, translate it, adapt it, build on it, including commercially.
The one condition is attribution. Credit the author and the Press, link to the licence, cite the DOI, and state whether you changed anything. Where a title carries a different Creative Commons licence, its terms apply instead; the licence is stated on the book.
Authors Reusing Their Own Work
You may reuse your own material however you wish, in teaching, in a later book, in an article, in a translation or in a public lecture, without seeking our permission. You do not need to ask us for something you already own.
Third-Party Material in Our Books
Some items within an otherwise open book may not be openly licensed: images, archival documents, long quotations or figures where the rights holder would not permit it. These are clearly marked in the text with their rights status. The licence on the rest of the book is unaffected, but to reuse a marked item you must approach its rights holder directly.
Using Third-Party Material in a Book You Are Writing for Us
You are responsible for clearing it, and it must be cleared for open licensing; a print-only permission is not sufficient for a CC BY book. Clearance is the commonest cause of delay in open-access book production and should be started as soon as a proposal is accepted. We supply templates and advice, and we will help you find alternatives where clearance proves impossible. See author guidelines.
Translation
Translation of a CC BY title requires no permission from us. Please tell us in any case. We will link to the translation from the book's page, register it properly, and help with metadata. Where a translation is being prepared for a readership that would otherwise be excluded, tell us; we may be able to help in other ways.
Requests We Do Still Need to Handle
- Use of our name, imprint or logo, including any suggestion of endorsement.
- Reuse of cover artwork, which is often separately licensed from the text.
- Reuse of marked third-party material: for this you need the rights holder rather than us, but we will tell you who they are.
